On Friday, a representative from Lionsgate announced that the entertainment company has halted its advertising on X due to Elon Musk’s recent anti-Semitic social media activity. This move coincides with the promotional efforts for the latest release in its “Hunger Games” franchise, “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.” Similarly, IBM confirmed on Friday that it has suspended all advertising on X while an investigation into the situation takes place. Disney is also reported to have taken similar action on the same day. A representative from Warner Bros. Discovery stated on Friday that the company has “paused” its presence on X, although it was already considered minimal.
Musk’s endorsement on Twitter, on Wednesday, of a statement implying negative attitudes toward the “Western Jewish population,” triggered the current response. This was intensified by Musk’s repost of the comment and his agreement, saying, “You said the real truth.”
According to Axios, Apple, one of the industry’s leading advertisers, has also ceased its advertising on Axios.
This recent wave of withdrawals from Madison Avenue is occurring alongside the White House and the European Commission’s firm stance against X. In a statement, the commission expressed concerns about the increase in disinformation and hate speech on various social media platforms, and singled out X as particularly impactful. A White House statement on Friday denounced the spread of anti-Semitism and racist hatred, going against American core values.
Despite the controversy over Musk’s comments, a Thursday post ex ceo Linda Yaccarino, stated that the social media platform is resolute in its efforts to combat anti-Semitism and discrimination. She added, “There is no place for this anywhere in the world – it is ugly and wrong. full stop.”
