AI Regulation: Microsoft President Brad Smith has stressed on the need to enforce regulations for Artificial Intelligence (AI) at both the national and international levels. In an interview with PTI, Smith acknowledged the immense potential of AI to make a positive impact on society, especially in India. However, he underscored the importance of balancing this optimism with the responsibility of handling the implications of AI.
Smith lauded India’s recently introduced data protection law, calling it a “good law”. He also praised India’s progress in digital public infrastructure, highlighting the country’s leadership in digital technology. He said that India’s progress has attracted the interest of other countries wishing to replicate the same modalities.
“When you think about Microsoft, India has become one of our most important countries, not only for customers, but for employees and talent… even in a year where the tech sector needed to reduce some jobs in some cases, India grew for Microsoft,” Smith said.
Global Consensus on AI Regulation
Addressing the need for global guidelines on AI, Smith reaffirmed the need for laws and regulations to ensure safety. He expressed that it is unrealistic to slow down technological progress, but stressed the importance of expediting the establishment of controls and safeguards.
Responding to concerns about the potential risks of AI, Smith expressed optimism about the technology but acknowledged the responsibility associated with its development. He stressed the importance of considering both benefits and risks and prioritizing the well-being of humanity.
During 2023, the discussion about building safeguards for AI has gained prominence. Global experts and technology leaders have raised concerns about the potential threats posed by AI, comparing it to societal risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.
We must think broadly and act with determination: Smith
The rise of AI and large language models has raised concerns about their potential misuse, such as spreading misinformation and displacing white-collar jobs. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s commitment to India remains steadfast, with Smith reaffirming the company’s intention to continue investing and hiring in the country.
“I think we should wake up every morning and see both sides of the coin very clearly. If we do this, if we think broadly, if we act with determination, we will help humanity Will serve well. That has to be our first priority,” he said.
Ultimately, Smith’s call for regulations reflects the industry’s growing recognition of the need to balance the benefits of AI with its potential risks. As India’s digital infrastructure continues to grow and attract international attention, discussions about responsible AI development and implementation are at the forefront of the global conversation.
