Per internal documents from Amazon, as previously covered by Insider and CNBC, the company’s leadership has introduced a new stipulation that employees under consideration for promotion must adhere to the requirement of being present in the office a minimum of three times per week, which took effect earlier in the year.
The revised policy now mandates approval from the vice president, in addition to the manager, for promoting an employee who does not fulfill the office attendance requirement. The report also indicates that Amazon managers and the HR team are monitoring adherence while assessing an employee’s “readiness for promotion.”
An Amazon spokesperson informed Fox Business, “Advancement is one of the numerous ways we foster employee growth and development, and we evaluate numerous factors when determining an employee’s preparedness for the next level.”

Amazon has a procedure for employees to request remote work exceptions and has indicated that it will review such requests on a case-by-case basis, similar to the approach followed before the pandemic. Additionally, the promotion of employees who do not have regular office attendance also necessitates additional approval from leadership.

Andrew Jessie, CEO initially announced in February Amazon’s intention for employees to return to the office at least thrice a week as part of reviewing various work arrangements utilized by teams during the pandemic, encompassing fully remote, hybrid, and full-time in-office with partial remote options.

At that time, Jassy mentioned the possibility of exceptions, such as allowing people to work from the office a minimum of three days a week, as was the pre-pandemic policy. Nevertheless, he indicated that such exceptions would be infrequent within the company’s workforce.
“As was the case before the pandemic, some roles (e.g. certain salespeople, customer support, etc.) and exceptions to these expectations will still exist, but they will form a small minority,” Jassy stated.

Amazon’s return-to-office obligation became effective on May 1, garnering discontent among employees, with certain individuals staging walkouts in protest and over 30,000 signatories to an internal petition this spring, which was ultimately rejected by management.
The e-commerce giant boasts a global workforce of over 1.46 million individuals and maintains offices in various locations, including its headquarters in Seattle and secondary headquarters in Arlington, Virginia.
