My insights are based on a discussion with Greg Schwartz regarding freelancing on Upwork. Business Insider has verified revenue and profits with documentation. The following has been edited for brevity and clarity.Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!
My major in college was computer science. I’ve dabbled in programming over the years but spent eight years as a freelance UX designer.
In 2023, I chose to transition into prompt engineering for AI and initiated a podcast on prompt engineering in March. One of my interviewees mentioned significant success in securing work on Upwork.
I made the decision to give it a shot. I signed up on the platform and offered prompt engineering services for large language models such as ChatGPT, Cloud, and MidJourney.
Clear AI instructions are crucial. I find three specific concepts to be highly valuable.
1. Define the chatbot’s function
It’s essential to specify the role or occupation of the large language model. Requesting it to “perform as a writer” will yield different results compared to prompting it to “act as a party planner” or “be a programmer.”
For instance, asking the chatbot to: “Act as a party planner and write this Python code,” will lead to less desirable outcomes than asking it to perform the same task as a developer.
2. Provide comprehensive context
One of my clients asked ChatGPT to convert a document into a memo, but without clear context, the output was ambiguous and haphazard.
You need to define the memo’s required length and adhere to specific structuring guidelines.
For example, if you need an AI to summarize the most mentioned places in an article, it’s insufficient to simply instruct: “Summarize these three places in the US that were mentioned the most.” You must provide refined instructions, guiding the AI to recognize, distinguish, and rank the most mentioned places within the United States.
3. Break down the instructions into multiple queries
Tasks often involve complexity, necessitating step-by-step guidance across multiple prompts.
In the earlier example, you could initiate the first prompt as follows: “Completely read the document and compile a list of all mentioned places along with their frequencies of mention.”
Subsequently, the next prompt might be: “Identify the locations within the United States.”
The subsequent prompt could be: “Organize them by frequency and then select the top three,” or any other specific requirement.
