Linz, 10 October 2023 Kontron has announced the achievement of two design wins with a combined volume of approximately EUR 100 million. These wins include Contron providing IFEC systems to be installed on aircraft operated by several airlines, including aircraft using satellite-based technology.
For the first design win, Contron will supply key components of the satellite-based IFEC (in-flight entertainment and communications) system, which will be installed in multiple airlines’ aircraft over five years starting in 2024. Kontron will provide leading-edge technology, allowing connectivity via geostationary (GEO), medium Earth orbit (MEO), and low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations. Potential revenue over a five-year period is approximately EUR 90m.
In addition, Kontron has announced a second design win over a two-year period with a volume of approximately 10 million euros. Starting in 2024, Contron will supply IFEC equipment to a major satellite communications operator that will be installed in the aircraft of several airlines. The agreement includes options to increase volumes and add further deployments.
In general, a major technology shift from geostationary to low and medium Earth orbit satellite constellations is taking place that will continue to shape satellite connectivity in aviation and other markets in the years to come. With a design win for a satellite-based IFEC system, Kontron shows it is on the cutting edge of this trend. Another support for Contron’s avionics business has been the return on travel after years of no or low investment following the Covid pandemic.
