Google’s next-generation Pixel 8 smartphone is likely to get some powerful camera upgrades , [+]
As excitement grows for Google’s soon-to-be-released Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, even more information has leaked about their planned camera upgrades — and this time, the information has leaked directly from Google.
In an official survey recently sent to Pixel Superfans, the company solicited opinions on the “future of Pixel sports,” asking its most loyal customer base to choose from several spot-based photography scenarios, including which would be most impressed. will likely be their decision when buying a new smartphone.
Interestingly, the list of scenarios includes a selection of unreleased camera-based features that are not currently available in any Pixel product. I have listed them below:
- A new Audio Magic Eraser function, already detailed in previous leaks, uses AI to remove unwanted background sounds from your video recordings.
- AI Photo Fusion, which “merges everyone’s best shots with your phone’s AI technology to create the perfect team portrait, making everyone look great.”
- New “GPhoto” editing features—refers to new AI-based features in Google Photos that let you “instantly change photo backgrounds, people’s clothes, or anything else in photos.” This probably refers to the Magic Editor function announced earlier this year.
- Fast camera openings—The Pixel 7 Pro camera is already snappy at launch, so it’ll be interesting to see what the Pixel 8 pulls off here and whether it’ll make a noticeable difference.
The full list of scenarios has been posted by the veteran tipster on X (nee Twitter) Kamila Wojciechowska,
It’s notoriously difficult to get group photos right, especially with a large number of people (someone’s eyes are always closed!), so any AI-powered help would be more than welcome here. It is not uncommon for professional photographers to take several versions of a group shot, before painstakingly cropping the best elements from each one and pasting them into a new “whole” result. Ordinary users are unlikely to encounter this trouble, so having a smartphone do it for you would be an impressive addition to the camera.
Apart from these software tricks, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro cameras are expected to feature an updated camera app and some significantly upgraded camera hardware. It looks like we’re in for an impressive display when the Pixel 8 range finally launches later this year.
