Recently, WhatsApp Messenger has introduced numerous features that enhanced the user experience on its rapid messaging platform. However, Google’s announcement has put a stop to this string of positive developments for users.
What’s the connection between WhatsApp and Google? The tech giant “G” company backs up “every single backup” to Drive (the cloud) through the green application. It comprises a document or backup of all your messages and media files to prevent loss in case of device theft, enabling restoration of the data on another smartphone.
The backups are substantial (over 5GB) and at present do not occupy storage in Google Drive. However, according to the information released by Alphabet, Inc., they will soon consume that space. It’s worth noting that Drive, Gmail, and Photos collectively share a total of 15GB, and if all space is used up, new backups might not be saved and additional space would need to be purchased.
Turn off automatic media file downloads
- The aim is to keep your backup lightweight.
- Check that WhatsApp has no pending updates.
- Now, tap the three dots icon at the top right and access “Settings” (on Android). Tap the gear icon at the bottom right (on iOS).
- Next, click on the “Storage and data” section.
- Proceed to the “Automatic download” section.
- Here, decide whether WhatsApp should download photos, audios, videos, and documents with mobile data activated.
- Make the same decision when connected to a Wi-Fi network.
- Ideally, only download photos in both scenarios, as videos often have significant file sizes, especially if group members frequently send memes and irrelevant files.
Select the quality of the photos you send or receive
- Return to “Storage and data” and navigate to the “File upload quality” section.
- Select “Photo upload quality”.
- You’ll be presented with three options: “Automatic (recommended)”, “Best quality”, and “Data saving”. Opt for the first or last choice, not the middle one.
- If you do so, WhatsApp will not compress the photos you send or receive, meaning they will be sent with their original quality, potentially taking up storage space.
Enable ephemeral messages
- This tool causes all conversation content to disappear after a set period.
- Currently, there are three options: 24 hours, 7 days, or three months. In a future update, additional durations, such as from an hour to a year, will be available.
- The “ephemeral messages” not only delete chat content but also remove those files from WhatsApp’s internal folder.
- To activate this feature, go to any chat and tap the contact’s name.
- Click on “Temporary messages” and choose the desired duration.
