Meta is opening an office in downtown Durham, the company formerly known as Facebook confirmed to Axios on Monday, ending months of speculation.
- Meta plans to employ approximately 100 engineers from the new office on the American Tobacco campus.
why it matters: The Triangle’s tech talent base continues to attract the attention of the world’s largest tech companies.
big picture: Apple has pledged to employ 3,000 workers by 2032 at its planned Research Triangle Park campus. Already Apple is renting space in the MetLife Tower in Cary.
Catch up fast: Meta began listing roles for Durham on its job boards last year for its Reality Labs division.
reality check: The big targets for the triangle of tech companies were mostly made before industry-wide layoffs began in the past few months.
- For example, Meta was considering expansion into Durham before it scaled back its hiring plans. It had laid off 11,000 employees in November.
What are we watching: The two biggest planned office projects in the triangle come from Apple and Epic Games. However, both of those offices still have uncertain construction timelines and come as remote working becomes popular.
- Apple is filing the necessary permits for the early stages of construction at its site in Research Triangle Park. And Epic has yet to release new plans for its future headquarters on the former Cary Town Center Mall property.
