As per billionaire investor Ray Dalio, virtually everyone harbors an underlying motivation – and discovering it necessitates self-pondering a straightforward inquiry.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!“When you absorb someone’s depiction of what is transpiring, self-reflect and ponder over: What are their predispositions and objectives?” Dalio, the 74-year-old initiator of hedge fund Bridgewater Associates, shared on the threads on Tuesday.
He articulated, “This is applicable to everything: when you’re procuring something, soliciting advice, reading a newspaper, watching the news, etc.” “This is because the majority of individuals (though not everyone) are seeking to persuade you to obtain something that will aid them in acquiring the things they desire.”
Perhaps a salesperson is endeavoring to persuade you to purchase a product due to the commission they will accrue, or a superior is withholding promotion despite your exceptional performance. In these circumstances, it can be advantageous to momentarily step back and contemplate the situation from the perspective of the other person.
“If you retain this query in your consciousness, and attain the answer to it, you’ll be capable of perceiving things from a more elevated standpoint,” Dalio expounded in a subsequent post: “If you can identify those who are true Allies or individuals who are genuinely endeavoring to assist you, particularly intelligent individuals, you’ll have a much more gratifying existence than if you neglected to do so.”
This is easier verbalized than executed: Pew Research Center divulged in 2019 that 64% of American adults believe their reliance on one another is dwindling. Nearly half of Americans (49%) affirm they lack interpersonal trust due to the diminished reliability of the people they confide in.
Contemplating whether an individual is reliable can impact your well-being, provoking feelings of solitude, unease, and despondency, as expressed by leadership and positive psychology coach Dianne Dreher in an article for Psychology Today in April.
“We require individuals we can rely on who can furnish stability, support, and a sense of community in our lives,” Dreher stated.
Regarding perceiving things from a “high level,” Dalio has long attributed his prosperity in evaluating financial markets to that skill. He intimated in a 2018 YouTube post that he also resorts to it when navigating through various other predicaments in his life, including personal struggles.
Dalio inscribed on Facebook a year later, “I term the capacity to transcend one’s own and others’ circumstances and view them impartially, ‘higher-level thinking’.” “Higher-level thinking bequeaths you the capacity to scrutinize and influence the cause-effect relationships transpiring in your life and utilize them to accomplish the outcomes you desire.”
