- Stellantis plans to produce an industry-first pickup for its Ram Trucks brand that is equipped with an onboard gas engine and electric generator.
- The truck can operate as a zero-emission EV until the vehicle’s battery is drained and features an electric onboard generator – powered by a 3.6-litre V6 engine – to power the vehicle after an initial charge. It starts.
- RAM CEO Tim Kuniskis described the new RAM 1500 RamCharger pickup as “the ultimate answer to battery-electric trucks.”

DETROIT – Automaker Stellantis plans to build the industry’s first electric pickup truck, called the Ram 1500 RamCharger, equipped with an electric generator and a gas engine.
If that sounds like a contradiction, here’s how it works: The truck can operate as a zero-emission EV until its battery drains and an electric onboard generator – 27- Gallon, powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine – turns on to power the vehicle.
According to Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis, the result is a truck that has the benefits of an EV, like fast acceleration and some zero-emissions driving, without the range anxiety that is synonymous with most current electric vehicles.
“This is the ultimate answer to the battery-electric truck. No one else has anything like it,” Kuniskis told reporters at an event. “This is going to be a game changer for battery-electric trucks.”
The 2025 Ram 1500 RamCharger is expected to go on sale in late 2024 along with the previously revealed all-electric Ram 1500 truck without a gas-powered engine or range-extending electric generator.
Stellantis estimates the RamCharger will have up to 690 miles of range, including up to 145 miles of range powered by a 92-kilowatt-hour battery when fully charged without the gas engine and extended-range power from a 130-kilowatt electric generator.
That range compares to the expected 500-mile range of the all-electric Ram 1500 REV pickup. It also tops the existing Ram 1500, which has a 3.6-liter V-6 engine and up to a 26-gallon tank, giving it a total range of up to 546 miles, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Stellantis did not announce pricing for the RamCharger, which was revealed Tuesday as part of a redesign of the current gasoline-powered Ram 1500 pickup for the 2025 model year.
Kuniskis said the RamCharger is meant to be a bridge between traditional trucks with internal combustion engines and trucks with full-electric ones, which currently face significant barriers with respect to charging infrastructure and range anxiety, especially when the vehicles are towed. Are – the main reason for buying a truck.
Such improvements could be a differentiating factor for brands, according to Stephanie Brinley, associate director of autointelligence for S&P Global Mobility.
“This serves to address the fact that right now the industry, and especially the pickup truck segment, is just not ready to go to 100% EVs,” he said. “It addresses some of those performance and range anxiety concerns, and it’s robust. – But the tricky part is getting consumers to really understand what it does.”

Similar propulsion technology – known as extended-range electric vehicles, or EREVs – is available in foreign markets, particularly China. It has also been introduced in vehicles such as General Motors’ discontinued Chevrolet Volt sedan.
Stellantis engineers said the main difference between the RamCharger and the Volt’s technology is that after the battery is drained the trucks are powered exclusively by electric motors, not the vehicle’s engine. It is also expected to be its first application in a production full-size pickup truck.
Stellantis said the RamCharger has 663 horsepower and 615 foot-pounds of torque and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. The company said the truck will be capable of bidirectional charging, where the vehicle acts as a generator to power devices or even an entire home.
Kuniskis, who also leads Stellantis’ Dodge brand, declined to comment on whether the RamCharger’s technology would be used in other vehicles. Other Stellantis brands include Chrysler, Jeep and Fiat in the US.
RamCharger operates differently from existing plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, or PHEVs, providing a range of all-electric driving, followed by the engine powering the vehicle after the battery is depleted.

“The RamCharger is not a PHEV,” Kuniskis said. “It’s a battery-electric truck with its own onboard, high-speed charger.”
“There is no connection between the engine and the wheels,” he said. “The gas generator is only for charging the battery.”
RAM’s truck strategy differs from its major competitors GM and Ford Motor. The latter is offering conventional, hybrid and all-electric versions of its F-150 full-size truck, while GM has said it plans to transition from conventional trucks to electric trucks without the use of hybrids.
Stellantis currently offers PHEV versions of vehicles such as the Chrysler Pacifica minivan and the Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee SUVs.
The RamCharger’s design is a mix between the all-electric Ram 1500 REV and refreshed gas versions of conventional trucks, which will be available early next year.
The RamCharger features illuminated lines from the headlamps to its grille, the new badging introduced on the all-electric truck, and other design and fascia elements in between.
For the traditional Ram 1500 model, the biggest change is that the company is ditching its famous Hemi V-8. The current 5.7-litre Hemi engine offered in the truck will be replaced by a twin-turbocharged, inline-six-cylinder engine called the Hurricane.

“Some customers will be upset that you won’t have the Hemi,” Kuniskis said. “Sure, the Hemi is an absolute legend. Americans love Hemi, but this thing outperforms the Hemi.”
The 3.0-liter Hurricane engine is rated at 420 horsepower and 469 foot-pounds of torque, while a high-output version of the engine is rated at 540 horsepower and 521 foot-pounds of torque. This compares with 395 horsepower and 410 foot-pounds of torque from the existing V-8 Hemi.
Inline-, or straight-, six-cylinder engines have been used in American vehicles by automakers such as BMW and Jaguar, however, they are far from mainstream in the US.
Other changes to the trucks include a new luxury model called the Tungsten and a performance version called the RHO that replaces Ram’s high-output TRX pickup with a Hemi 6.2-liter V-8 capable of 702 horsepower and 650 foot-pounds of torque. Is equipped with.
